In early 2024, Jordan Mercer was running SEO audits for enterprise clients and kept finding the same thing: brands that ranked in position one on Google were being described inaccurately, or not described at all, when their customers asked ChatGPT or Gemini about them. The traffic was not going to competitors. It was disappearing into AI answers that no one was monitoring.
At the same time, Alex Chen was building search and NLP infrastructure and watching the same pattern from the technical side: AI language models were synthesizing brand information from outdated, low-authority sources because the right content was not structured for citation. The problem was not that brands were invisible in traditional search. It was that they were invisible to the systems that were increasingly replacing it.
"We could not find a tool that monitored AI citation accuracy across platforms, diagnosed the cause, and fixed it in the same workflow. So we built one, and DataLab is the part we're most proud of."
RankAbove launched in 2024 as the first platform purpose-built to unify SEO, GEO, and AEO into one empirically validated system. DataLab, the proprietary citation scoring system that calibrates against real citation data rather than theoretical models, was the product of six months of research before a single line of product code was written.
The platform is built and operated by Fulcrum Digital, with offices in New York and India.
